What is a Hockey/Family Advisor?

A Hockey/Family Advisor assists a hockey player and their family in achieving their educational and hockey goals. I will help formulate a plan that puts the player in the best position both short term and long term. Creating a clear path will help the player get to their desired goal, whether that be competitive AA/AAA Club Hockey Team, High School/Prep School Team, Junior Team or College Division 1, 2 or 3. I will also be your contact with teams and will be able to reach out to various teams and find the best fit for each individual.

In most sports, the path of progression is linear. Players start with a local Youth Team, move to playing with their High School and/or Local Organization, then play in College, and then hopefully play Professionally. Hockey has a different and much more complicated path that players can take. While the linear path is an option, there is also the possibility to play for different Travel Teams, play different levels of Junior Hockey in the US, Canada and Europe and then still have the option to play in College. It is also important to be aware that playing in certain leagues can cost you your NCAA eligibility. If you play any games for a CHL team (OHL, WHL, QMJHL) then you can NOT play NCAA hockey. Other leagues like the USHL, NAHL, etc. will allow you to maintain your NCAA eligibility.

Once you’ve identified an advisor, there are certain guidelines families must follow to ensure that relationship doesn’t violate NCAA rules:

  • Do not accept gifts of any kind from an advisor, including money, meals, travel expenses, equipment, etc.

  • Do not enter into an agreement – either signed or verbally – to have an advisor represent the player as an agent in the future.

  • Do not ask the advisor to market your players abilities to professional teams.

  • Do plan to compensate the advisor for their services; failure to do so may be considered the player receiving a gift from the advisor, which would be an NCAA violation.

Information on the 48-hour Rule:

While playing in the CHL will cause you to lose your NCAA eligibility, you are still able to attend a CHL camp while following certain rules.

A CHL team can cover the expenses for you to attend a tryout/camp for up to 48 hours. The 48-hour period begins when you arrive at the tryout location. The expenses that can be covered include transportation, lodging, food, etc. Should you decide to stay longer than the 48-hours, then the player would have to cover all expenses thereafter. You are allowed to visit multiple teams; however, each team can only cover the expenses for the 48-hours one time.

While at the camp or tryout, you are only allowed to participate in practices and intrasquad scrimmages. If you play in a game (even an exhibition game) against another team, then you will lose your eligibility. In 2016, there was a case where an individual who was planning on playing for the University of Mane lost his eligibility because he had played 11 minutes of an OHL exhibition game.

You are also not allowed to accept any gifts from a CHL team. A team may give you a jersey, hat, etc. Should a team give you any type of gift, then you must return the items, pay for them or donate them to charity. Failure to do this will also cost you your NCAA eligibility.

The NCAA manual reads:

12.2.1.1 Tryout Before Enrollment-Men's Ice Hockey and Skiing. In men's ice hockey and skiing, a student-athlete remains eligible in a sport even though, prior to enrollment in a collegiate institution, the student-athlete may have tried out with a professional athletics team in a sport or received not more than one expense-paid visit from each professional team (or a combine including that team), provided such a visit did not exceed 48 hours and any payment or compensation in connection with the visit was not in excess of actual and necessary expenses. The 48-hour tryout period begins at the time the individual arrives at the tryout location. At the completion of the 48-hour period, the individual must depart the location of the tryout immediately in order to receive return transportation expenses. A tryout may extend beyond 48 hours if the individual self finances additional expenses, including return transportation. A self-financed tryout may be for any length of time.

How to get Started:

Contact me and I will set up a consultation with you either in person or by Zoom. I will get to know the player and family to find out their goals and desired future hockey path. Should you decide to hire me, I will assist the player and family in finding the team with the best fit, help contact various teams they are interested in, advise on their short-term/ long-term goals and more. If logistically possible, I will attend the players games in person a couple times a year. I have played hockey from the age of 7 and participated in Youth Hockey through College. I believe I have the extensive knowledge of the hockey world that will make the often confusing path easier.

Cost: $800.00 for the season
